Wisconsin Women Sweep Quad Meet

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. January, 29. THE University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished up day two of the Big Ten Quad Duals at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The Badger women swept their competition, beating Purdue 177-176, Illinois 260-93, and Minnesota 183-179, while the men lost to Purdue and Minnesota.

The women dominated the meet, placing in all eight events and winning four. Freshmen Yi Ting Siow won the 400-yard IM (4:19.33) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.00). Sarah Hernandez also had a strong meet, winning the 100-yard freestyle (51.07) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.16) along with teammates Jackie Vavrek, Amalia Sarnecki, and Anna Trinidad.

"I was happy with how the women reacted to being down," said head coach Eric Hansen. "They made a great comeback, but we still have a lot of work to do before the NCAA championships."

Hernandez and teammates Emily Carpenter, Susan Johnson and Trinidad also took third in the 400-freestyle relay (3:26.82). Meanwhile, Susan Johnson took second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.74), and Jenny Gelden added a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (57.06).

In addition, Jennifer Illescas earned third in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:55.81.

The men were led by Tom Molzahn, who finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:30.77) and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:23.10), along with teammates Mike Desautels, Kyle Sorensen and Eric Johnson. Mike Swanson earned third in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 4:32.73.

"The men had a few performances that were notable," said Hansen. "The young people showed progress, and that's always a good thing."

Highlighting the diving portion was senior Amanda Witte, who set a school record on the platform with a score of 245.95 on the platform.

"Amanda was diving extremely well all weekend," said diving coach Josh Seykora. "She was consistent, and had a good weekend overall."

The Badgers will finish up their regular season at 5 p.m. next Friday at the Natatorium starting. The teams will compete in an intra-squad scrimmage to help them prepare for the Big Ten championships.
