Notre Dame Men Take 2nd Place at Shamrock Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. January 29. THE Penn State men's swimming and diving team had a very strong day two performance at the Shamrock Invitational, beating out Oakland University, University of Louisville, and University of Missouri, but falling to Notre Dame.

The men beat out Oakland University with a score of 252-113. They topped Louisville 262-105 and Missouri 222-148. Notre Dame narrowly beat Penn State with a score of 197 points over Penn State's 173.

The men placed first in eight of fourteen of today's events. Seniors Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Chris Ippoliti (Berwyn, Pa.), sophomore Kyle Miranda (Louisville, Colo.), and freshman Sean Swanepoel (KZN, South Africa) captured their second first place finish of the weekend, winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1: 31.23.

Swanepoel and McLin, along with sophomores Sean Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Josh Graham (Newport News, Va.) took first in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:45.36. McLin, Biedermann, and Swanepoel, along with junior Dan Kaiserian (Radnor, Pa.) captured first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:01.96.

Today's events were highlighted by strong individual performances as well. Freshman David Kraft (Vienna, Va.) took first in the 1650-yard freestyle event with a time of 15:40.55. Freshman Pat Schirk (Pottstown, Pa.) took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1: 48.44, and freshman Tim Williams (North Bend, Ohio) placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.36.

McLin and Schirk also had strong finishes in the 100-yard backstroke. McLin placed first with a time of 50.15, while Schirk took second with a time of 50.17.

Senior Adam Pierce (Conroe, Texas) placed first in the 3-meter diving competition, with a score of 333.90.

The Penn State men's swimming and diving team hits the road for an away meet with Kenyon on Friday, Feb. 3, beginning at 3 p.m.
