Division I: No. 25 Pitt Falls To Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. January, 30. THE University of Pittsburgh men’s swimming and diving team ended its six-meet win streak, this afternoon, when it dropped a 130-111 decision to Virginia. No. 25 Pitt’s record falls to 8-2 on the season.

Sophomore Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) set off the meet with a first-place performance in the 1M boards, while freshman Aleksandr Volovetski (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) took second. Stultz paced the pack in the 3M dives, and Volovetski followed in second.

Senior Tommy Bird (Charleston, W.Va./Capitol) earned the team’s first top-swimming finish in the 50 free (20.98). Junior Jeff Leath (Mechanicsville, Va./New Community) clocked in at 21.30 for second in the same event. Leath, also, placed second in the 200 back (1:50.11) against Virginia.

In the 100 free, senior Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood) finished nearly a second faster than the second-place swimmer from Virginia, when he stopped the clock at 45.68. Freshman Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) finished third (46.60) in the 100 free.

In the opening race, the team of Bird, sophomore Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton) and seniors Michael Bernardi (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and Washington finished the 200 medley relay in second place at 1:31.10. Barnes went on to take second in the 200 breast at 2:05.09.

Miller took second in the 200 free (1:39.99), while junior Nathan McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa./The Kiski School) placed third (1:42.85). Later, Miller stopped the clock at 1:51.20 in the 200 fly for another second-place effort.

Pitt will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when the team hosts Clarion and Duquesne at Trees Pool, during Senior Day. Diving begins at 11 a.m. and all the seniors will be recognized before the meet.
