Indiana Gets By Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. January 20. THE No. 10 Indiana men’s swimming and diving team dominated No. 17 Kentucky, 160-137, in Lexington, Ky., on Jan. 20. Overall, the Hoosiers won 12 events, while senior Ryan Fagan eclipsed a 16-year-old school standard previously held by Olympic gold medalist Mark Lenzi. Meanwhile, sophomore Ben Hesen paced Indiana with four event titles.

"The meet was probably closer than it looked," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "There were a couple places where Kentucky gambled and it didn’t pay off. We pulled Sergiy out of the 1,000 free hoping we could win it with someone else. We also wanted Kentucky to swim Steven Manley in that race and use him up. That is exactly what they did. They got the win there, but at a high cost. We then went on to win the 200 free with Sergiy and the 50 free with Todd Patrick. Those two events turned the course of the meet."

The Cats won only four of the meet’s 16 events on the day. Senior All-American Steven Manley won the 1,000-yard freestyle and also claimed the 200-yard individual medley. Manley has now won 12 events in his last five meets. Senior All-American Daniel Farnham captured the 100-yard freestyle and teamed with Shane Eliason, Warren Grobbellar and Manley to win the 200-yard freestyle relay.
