Crippen Named ACC Swimmer of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. January, 18. UNIVERSITY of Virginia fourth-year swimmer Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week as announced Monday (Jan. 16). Crippen captured the honor for the third time this season and the 10th time in his career after winning two individual events in UVa's dual meets vs. Tennessee and Princeton on Jan. 14.

Crippen swept the 500 and 1000 freestyles against 10th-ranked Tennessee and Princeton. UVa registered a 119-91 win over Princeton, but fell to the Vols 135-108 at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. Crippen won 1000 free in a time of 9:09.09, less than half a second off his ACC-leading, season-best time in the event, and more than 10 seconds faster than his nearest competitor. He won the 500 free in 4:28.44, more than five seconds faster than the rest of the field. Crippen also posted a season-best time of 1:51.19 in taking third place in the 200 individual medley.

Crippen is an 11-time All-American and six-time ACC champion. He was named the ACC Men's Swimmer of the Year in 2003 and 2004 and also garnered ACC Men's Freshman of the Year honors in 2003.

The nationally-ranked Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 when they travel to Durham, N.C., to swim Duke at 6:00 p.m. The 14th-ranked Cavalier men and the 19th-ranked UVa women then swim at North Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 21. The men's meet will begin at 1:00 p.m., while the women's meet against the 21st-ranked Tar Heels starts at 4:00 p.m.
