Raider Men Suffer Defeat, Women Prevail against Bucknell

HAMILTON, N.Y. January, 18. THE Colgate women’s swimming and diving team earned its first win against Patriot League powerhouse Bucknell in 21 years on Tuesday, defeating the three-time defending league champion Bison 165-135 at Lineberry Natatorium.

“It was an impressive showing by the team today,” Colgate head coach Stephen Jungbluth said. “They stood up to a bigger, stronger squad and I think everyone performed very well.”

The Raiders were led by freshmen Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.), who won three individual events and one relay, Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who earned three individual wins, and Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.), who set two freshman records.

“This was a huge win,” senior co-captain Amy Cole (Loudonville, N.Y.) said. “Bucknell has won Patriots for the past three years, and we were really fired up to beat them. We’re training well, we have good attitudes, and we’re looking forward to Patriots.”

Colgate started the meet by breaking the Lineberry Natatorium record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.29. The team of Walker, Murphy, senior Chrissy Zaika (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) swam the event in the third-fastest time in school history.

In the next race, Marchi posted the fourth-best time in Colgate history in the 1,000 free, touching the pad in 10:34.08. She won her second event of the afternoon with a 1:54.30 in the 200 free, a time that ranks sixth all-time at Colgate. Her third win was in the 500 free where she posted a time of 5:09.63.

“It was fun,” Marchi said. “I think we all woke up today thinking, it doesn’t matter how hard we worked in training or how sore we are, this is Bucknell and we need to beat them. Everyone tried really hard and put out everything they’ve got, even though they were tired. The atmosphere was perfect and it all came together.”

Walker set the freshman record in the 100 back with the second-fastest time in school history, 58.32. She set another freshman record later in the day, posting the third-best time ever by a Raider in the 100 fly, 58.27. In the 200 back, she tied the fifth-fastest time in the Colgate record book, 2:07.25, and took second place. The winner of the event, Bucknell’s Lectie Altman, set the pool record with a time of 2:04.59

Murphy earned her second win of the meet in the 100 breast, posting a time of 1:06.61. Sophomore Kacy Reams (Evanston, Ill.) finished second, 2.20 seconds off Murphy’s pace. Murphy’s third win was in the 200 breast as she swam to the seventh-fastest time in school history, 2:24.53. Murphy also took top honors in the 200 IM, turning in a time of 2:09.68.

Zaika won the 50 free with a time of 24.51, and finished second in the 100 free with a time of 53.96. She holds the school record in both events.

Senior Emily McAuliff (Springfield, Ill.) swept the diving events, winning on the one-meter board with a score of 236.10 and taking the three-meter with 250.20 points. Senior Jen Rodgers (Glenmont, N.Y.) placed second in both events with 231.68 and 234.45 points, respectively. Junior Gretchen Swarr (Southport, Conn.) completed the Raider sweep of the top three spots on the high board with 229.10 points.

On the men's side senior Marc Falkner (Basking Ridge, N.J.) won three events, but it was not enough as the Colgate men’s swimming and diving team lost to Bucknell, 200.5-94.5, on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Lineberry Natatorium.

Falkner tied Bucknell’s William Schilling for the victory in the 100 breast with a time of 59.88. He won the 200 breast outright, beating Schilling by 0.19 seconds with a time of 2:08.93. Falkner also won the 200 IM in 1:57.59.

Freshman Stephen Haskin (Potomac, Md.) recorded a personal-best score of 246.15 in the one-meter diving competition to claim second place. He finished third on the three-meter board with 242.10 points.

The Raiders finished second in the 200 medley relay. Senior Levi Benson (Allegany, N.Y.), Falkner, sophomore Zach Whitman (Pittsford, N.Y.), and junior Zach Grobengieser (Spencerport, N.Y.) turned in a time of 1:37.44.

Whitman placed second in the 200 fly, touching the pad in 1:58.67, and was the runner-up in the 100 fly with a time of 52.43. He earned second-place points in the 200 IM after he finished in 2:02.26.

Grobengieser came in third in the 100 free with a time of 49.41, and senior James Silas (Bayside, N.Y.) was right behind him, posting a time of 49.95.

In the final race of the meet, the Raiders took first-place points in the 400 free relay as freshman George Bennitt (West Chester, Pa.), Silas, sophomore Jeff Jakob (Medford, N.J.) and freshman Dan Lathrop (Westerly, R.I.) turned in a time of 3:20.47.
