Cole Wins Second Straight St. Croix Sea Swim

ST. CROIX, V.I. January, 11. COLGATE senior co-captain Amy Cole (Loudonville, N.Y.) won the one-mile St. Croix Sea Swim for the 18-25 year age group for the second straight time on Sunday, Jan. 8.

Cole broke the course record for her age, which she set last year, and finished seventh overall. On Sunday, her record-setting performance came in rougher sea conditions and into a head wind.

“I wanted to better my performance from last year, and I was pretty fired up,” Cole said. “It was definitely a tougher race this year than last: it was more windy and the water was choppy. Overall, I think the training has been going well and that everyone has had a positive attitude.”

Colgate boasted four of the top five finishers in the women’s 18-25 year group. Sophomore Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.) finished third, followed by freshmen Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.) and Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.).

The Raiders placed four swimmers in the top six in the men’s 18-25 year group. Freshman George Bennitt (West Chester, Pa.) placed second in his age group and fourth overall, and classmate Rick McMahon (Middletown, N.Y.) was third in his group and sixth overall. Sophomore Jeff Jakob (Medford, N.J.) came in fifth in his age group and 10th overall, followed by classmate Zach Whitman (Pittsford, N.Y.), who finished sixth in the age group.

The race, hosted by the St. Croix Dolphins Swim Team, was a straight course that began at Abramson Pier and finished at Rainbow Beach. It was open to all ages and abilities, and featured Olympic swimmer Misty Hyman.

Colgate will continue to train in St. Croix through the end of the week.
