Pitt Women Down West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–The University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team opened its 2006 calendar year with a 164-79 win over West Virginia this afternoon. Pitt’s record improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big East.

In the 400 medley relay, the team of junior Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste.Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VS), freshman Ruth Seiffert, sophomore Brittany Stevens (Peachtree, Ga./Starr’s Mill) and freshman Stacie Safritt took first with a time of 3:52.69. Freshmen Laura Rosenberg and Karla Leite joined sophomores Sarah Wagner (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and Kelly O’Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek) to team up for the second-place time (4:00.61) in the same event.

Junior captain Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) claimed first and third place efforts, respectively, in the 200 freestyle. Brown clocked in at 1:50.79, while Safritt recorded a 1:54.94 finish.

Brown finished ahead of the pack in the 500 free, as well. Her time of 4:59.42 led the charge, while Leite (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale) finished at 5:18.79 in fourth. Then in the next swimming event, Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnet Valley), Leite and freshman Erika Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Mader del Divino Pastor) took second through fourth in the 200 breast.

Seniors Jordan Wallace (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Kelly Redcay (Reading, Pa./Wilson) supplied a one-two punch in the 50 free as the finished at 23.84 and 24.37, respectively. Later the duo also finished in the one and two spots in the 100 free. Wallace stopped the clock at 52.47 and Redcay recorded a time of 52.80.

Senior captain Amy Miteff (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) combined with freshmen classmates, Seiffert and Rosenberg (Newtown, Pa./Newtown), in the 400 IM and took the top three positions. Earlier in the meet, Miteff finished second in the 1000 free at 10:22.16.

Pitt concluded the swimming events with a 400 free relay victory at 3:27.78. Members of the winning squad were Wallace, Redcay, Sarfritt and Brown.

The Panthers will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 13 as they open a two-day meet against Maryland and Villanova at Trees Pool.
