Auburn Versus Texas Matchup Creeping Closer -- January 4, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas, January 4. AS collegiate programs around the country prepare for their return to the competitive scene, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com will take regular looks at some of the top meets on the schedule. And, when the season returns to full steam across the board, we’ll return with our weekly look at the schedule for the top 10 squads – men’s and women’s – in the latest rankings.

One of the finest meets on the agenda in the coming weeks is the male clash on January 13 between top-ranked Auburn and sixth-ranked Texas. The meet is scheduled for the Jamail Swim Center in Austin, Texas. The Tigers and Longhorns have combined for the last seven NCAA titles. After Auburn won the crown in 1999, Texas rolled to a trifecta of titles from 2000-02. Auburn regained control in 2003 and added championships in 2004 and 2005.

The Tigers are led by George Bovell, who looked sharp in the freestyle events during the fall semester, and Eric Shanteau, one of the top individual medley performers in the country. More, Doug Van Wie is a top-flight backstroker. As for the Longhorns, Garrett Weber-Gale anchors the sprint unit while Matt McGinnis is an A-One middle-distance swimmer.

On the coaching front, the Auburn-Texas gathering will match two of the best swimming minds in the world, David Marsh and Eddie Reese. Both men have molded countless NCAA champions and Olympians and Reese was the 2004 United States men’s Olympic coach.
