Biagioli Takes Five at Argentina Long Course Champs

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, December 14. WHEN the Argentina Long Course Championships were held last weekend, Cicilia Biagioli and Jose Meolans grabbed the spotlight with strong performances that are certain to send them into the New Year on a positive note. While Biagioli won five events on the female side, Meolans posted a freestyle trifecta.

Accounting for 60 percent of her triumphs, Biagioli bested the competition in the 100, 200 and 400 freestyle events. Clocking 58.38 and 2:04.20 during the shorter events, Biagioli delivered an effort of 4:15.85 en route to a win in the 400 free. For good measure, she also added first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:25.89) and the 400 I.M. (5:05.61).

As for Meolans, his gold-medal winning outings all arrived in quality times. In addition to winning the 50 free in 22.61, the Argentine claimed top honors in the 100 free with a swim of 49.07. His performance of 1:49.78 in the 200 free rounded out his wins. Matias Aguilera was second to Meolans in the 50 free and 100 free and took first place in the 50 fly (25.10).

Eduardo Otero and Manuela Morano also enjoyed quality meets with Otero prevailing in the 50 back (26.77), 100 back (57.48) and 100 butterfly (55.50). He also placed second in the 50 fly. As for Morano, she demonstrated her wide-ranging sprinting ability by claiming gold in the 50 distances of the back (31.33), fly (29.39) and free (26.58).
