Mew Posts Breaststroke Double at English Commonwealth Games Trials -- December 5, 2005

SWANSEA, Wales. December 5. THERE were a handful of solid times produced over the weekend at the English Commonwealth Games, including a pair of victories from Darren Mew in the 50 and 100 breaststroke events. The British record-holder in the 100 distance, Mew clocked times of 28.23 and 1:01.44. James Gibson, a two-time medalist at the 2003 World Championships, was third in the 50 breast (28.71) and claimed the 100 breast in 1:01.44.

Terri Dunning secured an impressive win in the women’s 200 butterfly with a performance of 2:11.47 and also won the 100 fly with a mark of 1:00.11. Ross Davenport uncorked a 1:49.32 effort in the 200 freestyle for a two-plus second triumph and veteran sprinter Mark Foster took top honors in the 50 butterfly with a swim of 24.18.

Known as one of the top freestylers in Britain, Melanie Marshall was the victor in the 200 backstroke, as her 2:13.10 edged the 2:14.67 of Lizzie Simmonds, a 14-year-old rising star. Simmonds, though, was the first-place finisher in the 100 back (1:02.56) and 50 back (29.99). Marshall also bested the competition in the 200 freestyle with the only sub-2:00 showing. Marshall finished in 1:59.74, ahead of Jo Jackson’s 2:00.00.

Rebecca Cooke highlighted the distance-freestyle action among the women with a triumph over Jackson in the 400 freestyle. Cooke covered the race in 4:10.15, comfortably ahead of the 4:11.56 of Jackson. Cooke also touched the wall first in the 400 I.M. with a swim of 4:46.91. Gregor Tait was a double-winner, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:05.87, a pedestrian time, and the 200 backstroke (2:01.98).
