INDUSTRY NEWS: Speedo Moves into Bobsledding

LOS ANGELES, December 6. LONG known for its role in the swimming world, Speedo has announced a decision to head to the bobsled course for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The company, according to a story in USA Today, has signed a number of U.S. Olympic hopefuls in the bobsled, including Vonetta Flowers. The athletes are expected to wear the Fastskin FSII ice suits.

The suits will be available in early 2006 at a cost of $500. Speedo has made a move toward signing young talents to its label, as Michael Phelps and Amanda Beard wore the company’s FSII swimsuits at the Athens Olympics. Flowers was a gold medalist at the 2002 Olympic Games and is someone who could bolster the Speedo image as the company seeks to grow in the apparel industry.
