Dumitru Sets Division II Record in 100 Butterfly

WEST CHESTER, Pennsylvania, November 29. ONLY a freshman, Kathrin Dumitru has wasted little time making an impression on the national scene at the Division II level. Actually, Dumitru has established herself as a national force regardless of level. For proof, take a look at her efforts from the recent Terrapin Cup, held at the University of Maryland.

The top gun for West Chester University, Dumitru set a Division II record in the 100 butterfly by winning the event in College Park (Md.) with a time of 53.99. That effort was better than the 54.03 produced by Loni Burton in 2004. Burton, of course, is one of the top Division II swimmers in history, thanks to her splendid career at Cal State-Bakersfield.

From Kunzell, Germany, Dumitru has added a huge boost to the West Chester program, a major player at the Division II level. At the Terrapin Cup, the freshman also won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.06). For good measure, she delivered second-place showings in the 200 individual medley (2:03.04) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.03). All of her times met the B qualifying standard for the NCAA Division I Championships.
