Stanford Opens Speedo Cup with Quality Results

LONG BEACH, California, November 18. QUICK swimming was on the docket on Thursday, during the opening day of the UC Irvine Speedo Cup. The competition, which features Stanford as the headliner program, is being held at Belmont Plaza. The first day of the four-day meet consisted of five events each for the men and women.

Stanford’s Hongzhe Sun turned in the most impressive performance of the first day, as he led a Cardinal sweep of the top four places in the 200 individual medley. Sun was clocked in 1:46.08, ahead of teammates Tobias Oriwol (1:47.61) and Mark Stephens (1:49.52). Nate Cass rounded out the event for Stanford with a mark of 1:50.41.

In the 500 freestyle, Stanford’s Andy Grant easily prevailed with a time of 4:18.43. The swim automatically qualified Grant for the NCAA Championships and provided a victory over two other Stanford swimmers, Danny Beal (4:23.56) and Shaun Phillips (4:23.77). The Cardinal also took top honors in the 200 freestyle relay (1:20.68) and the 400 medley relay (3:16.71). Brigham Young’s Brett Allen (20.16) edged Stanford’s Ben Wildman-Tobriner (20.23) in the 50 freestyle. Allen popped a 19.91 during prelims.

On the female side, Stanford delivered triumphs in each of the five events, led by Dana Kirk’s 2:00.50 effort in the 200 individual medley. Kirk was followed to the wall by Kristen Caverly (2:00.57) and Laura Davis (2:01.45). The Cardinal also swept the top three slots in the 500 free, led by Elizabeth Durot (4:45.45). The second and third positions were secured by Desiree Stahley (4:48.79) and Morgan Hentzen (4:51.03).

Brooke Bishop gave the Cardinal a win in the 50 free (22.99) and Stanford cruised to victories in the 200 free relay (1:33.27) and the 400 medley relay (3:40.75). Stanford leads the men’s team standings with 546 points while Air Force sits second with 286 points. The Stanford women piled up 551.5 points to the 211.5 of Brigham Young.
