Record-Breaking Swims Highlight Chinese National Games

NANJING, China, October 17. FAST times have continued to pour out of the Chinese National Games, evident in a handful of Asian and national-record times. Leading the way was Ouyang Kunpeng in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. Registering a new Asian standard of 54.09, Ouyang secured victory from Wang Wei (54.30) and Lin Yi (54.53).

Another Asian record was supplied by Chen Zuo in the men’s 100 freestyle, as he touched the wall in 49.56. That record was complemented by a fresh Chinese standard in the men’s 200 butterfly, courtesy of Wu Peng. Already the winner of the 400 individual medley at the competition, Wu sizzled 1:55.78 to garner the win from Chen Yin (1:57.44). At the World Championships in Montreal over the summer, Wu picked up the bronze medal in the 200 fly.

The breaststroke events also produced some stellar swims, highlighted by a Chinese record from Liu Weijia in the men’s 200 distance. Clocking 2:14.28, Liu finished ahead of Lai Zhongjian (2:14.41). As for the women’s 100 breast, it was won by Olympic and two-time world champion Luo Xuejuan. Luo stopped the clock in 1:06.86, ahead of Qi Hui’s 1:07.27 effort. Qi came back and won the 200 I.M. in 2:12.17, slightly quicker than the 2:12.83 of Zhang Xin.

In other action, 13-year-old Huang Xiaotong won the women’s 200 butterfly in 2:09.25, which was faster than the 2:10.31 of Juo Liuyang. Meanwhile, Zhang Lin won the men’s 200 free and Gao Chang prevailed in the women’s 100 back.
