Wu Peng Soars to Win in 400 I.M. at Chinese National Games -- October 15, 2005
NANJING, China, October 15. THE biggest name among Chinese men, Wu Peng delivered a victory on Friday in the 400 individual medley at the National Games. Wu clocked in at 4:15.76, nearly five seconds ahead of the effort of Zhao Tao. His triumph arrived on the second day of the competition, viewed with much prestige in China.
Wu has enjoyed a stellar season, as he was the bronze medalist in the 200 butterfly at the World Championships in Montreal in July. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Wu finished sixth in the 200 fly and also placed 14th in the 400 I.M.
In the women's 100 butterfly, Zhou Yafei narrowly bested the competition, as she produced a winning mark of 58.57. That time was just ahead of the 58.65 effort uncorked by Xu Yanwei. In the 400 freestyle, Yang Jieqiao touched the wall in 4:07.54, quicker than Li Mo (4:08.07) and Tan Miao (4:08.23).
The men's 100 breaststroke featured a win from Wang Mengjian in 1:02.18, faster than the 1:02.47 of Xie Zhi.
