NCAA Men’s Water Polo: UCLA Drops UC Irvine, 13-3

WESTWOOD, CA – Junior Adam Wright scored three goals, while junior Sean Kern and senior Sam Bailey each added a pair to join seven other Bruins in a scoring barrage, as the UCLA men’s water polo team (1-0) defeated UC Irvine (0-1) 13-3 at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

The Bruins took some time to get on the board, but senior Matt Armato netted the first goal of the match with 53 seconds left in the first quarter and was quickly followed by Wright to put UCLA ahead 2-0. In the second quarter, continued domination by the Bruins included three more goals by juniors Blake Wellen, Andrew Bailey and Wright to seal a 5-0 shutout at the half.

UCLA caught on fire in the second half, with third quarter goals by Kern (2), senior Brian Brown and Wright’s third score of the day. But the Anteaters prevented a shutout in the fourth quarter when UC Irvine’s John Dorfi scored past Bruin goalkeeper Parsa Bonderson. Dorfi scored his second goal later in the quarter against UCLA senior reserve netkeeper Mike Coppin, capitalizing on a six on five Anteater advantage.

UCLA reserve senior Sam Bailey added a single-game career high two goals, both in the final quarter, while senior Neil Hueston and sophomore Jeff Pflueger also added scores. Jeff Powers rounded out the scoring for UC Irvine with the Anteaters’ final goal.
