Drug Testing Reveals No Positive Results from World Championships -- September 27, 2005

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, September 27. IN what can only be viewed as a major victory for the aquatic sports world, FINA just announced that no positive drug tests emerged from the 11th World Championships, held in July in Montreal. Yes, that means the competition was clean in swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, open-water swimming and water polo.

There were 313 conventional urine tests conducted by FINA, the world governing body for aquatic sports. Additionally, 61 tests were performed for the detection of EPO, a performance-enhancing drug that boosts the body’s red blood cell count. The tests covered 237 athletes from 42 nations. In the days leading up to the World Champs, the World Anti-Doping Agency conducted 63 out-of-competition tests.
