Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu Wins Three Out of Seven Events Swum Tonight in Hungary

DEBRECEN, Hungary, July 19. TONIGHT was a true testament to just how tough the Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu has become. At the Hungarian Open Nationals, Hosszu ran her total tally to eight individual titles with three more wins tonight. More impressive, it was part of an eight-swim evening.

Win number six for the Iron Lady came by way of a one-second victory in the women’s 200-meter IM. She clocked a 2:14.05 to beat Reka Gyorgy (2:15.05) in the finale. That’s well off Hosszu’s sixth-ranked season best of 2:10.60, but what can one expect when Hosszu is swimming in every single possible event this week. Dalma Sebestyen finished third in the heat with a 2:17.44.

Hosszu doubled up tonight en route to a seventh individual national title as she ripped off a 1:56.74 in the women’s 200-meter free. That’s almost as fast as her seventh-ranked season best of 1:56.30 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Grand Prix. Boglarka Kapas finished second tonight in 1:59.54 with Martina De Memme earning third in 2:00.80.

Hosszu then snagged her 11th medal overall with a third-place time of 1:11.32 in the women’s 100-meter breast. Anna Sztankovics, the top breaststroker at the meet, won yet again in 1:09.26, while Lisa Fissneider checked in with a second-place 1:10.92.

Hosszu ran out of steam a bit in the women’s 100-meter fly with a fifth-place 59.65. Elena Di Liddo won the finale in 58.26, off her eighth-ranked season best of 57.73 from the Sette Colli. Evelyn Verraszto claimed second in the finale with a 58.42, while Liliana Szilagyi wound up third in 58.90.

Hosszu bounced back in the women’s 200-meter back with a 2:12.04 for her third title of the night and eight individual crown of the week! Kata Burian placed second in 2:13.73 with Dalma Matyasovzky winding up third in 2:14.62.

Earlier in the night, Hosszu qualified second in the 50 free with a 25.38 before taking fourth in the finale in 26.10. Silvia Di Pietro won in 25.21 with Italian teammate Erika Ferraioli finishing a close second in 25.22. Flora Molnar rounded out the podium in 25.63.

Hosszu closed out her individual swims for the night with a fourth-place 17:01.83 in the women’s 1500-meter free. Kapas won this event in 16:19.47 to move to 14th in the world rankings. Eva Risztov placed second in 16:32.79 with Nikolett Szilagyi winding up third in 16:50.92.

Daniel Gyurta crushed the men’s 200-meter breaststroke finale with a 2:08.72. That effort pushed him to fifth in the world rankings, while David Verraszto touched well back with a second-place 2:12.36. Luca Pizzini clinched third in 2:12.78.

Dominik Kozma hit the wall in 49.14 to win the men’s 100-meter free, while Krisztian Takacs put up a 49.68 for second. Peter Holoda rounded out the top three in 49.72. Christopher Ciccarese won the men’s 100-meter back in 54.91, while Gabor Balog took second in 55.04. Tomasz Polewka snagged third in 55.07.

Laszlo Cseh picked up the men’s 200-meter IM title in 2:00.69 with Peter Bernek checking in second in 2:01.80. Marcin Suzin wound up third in 2:01.85 for Poland. Cseh doubled up with a 24.05 to win the men’s 50-meter fly, while Kristian Gkolomeev placed second in 24.13. Bence Pulai pocketed third in 24.23.
