Three-For-Three For Tae Hwan Park With 400 Free Victory

GIMCHEON, South Korea, July 18. ALTHOUGH he isn’t quite taking on a Katinka Hosszu load at the South Korean Nationals in Gimcheon, Olympic gold medalist Tae Hwan Park is certainly giving himself a workout. So far, he’s captured a trio of gold medals in as many tries in South Korea this week.

Park claimed his third gold of the meet with a time of 3:44.75 in the men’s 400-meter free, this after having already won the 200 free and 200 IM earlier in the meet. His effort came up just a bit short of his third-ranked season best of 3:43.96 from the NSW State Championships in Sydney. Jang Sang Jin took second in 3:54.61 with Jeong Jeong Su placing third in 3:55.12.

Earlier in the meet, Park won the 200 free with a 1:45.25 to top the world rankings, before following that up with a Korean record time of 2:00.31 in the 200 IM. Park still has the 400 IM and the other freestyle events to come.

In other swimming, Kim Su Yeon set a meet record in the women’s 400-meter free with a 4:17.38. Lim Tae Jung hit the wall in 1:59.46 for a meet record in the men’s 200-meter back, while Ham Chan Mi set a meet record in the women’s 200-meter back with a 2:13.88.

In a close call, Choi Kyu Woong clipped Hun Claim in the men’s 200-meter breast, 2:13.45 to 2:13.49, to finish the finale with a meet record. Back Su Yeon then won the women’s 200-meter breast in 2:27.04.
