Daynara De Paula Has Strong Day at Brazilian Winter Nationals

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 8. THE second day of action at the Brazilian Winter Nationals is in the books in Rio de Janeiro after a first day that featured a sizzling men’s 50-meter breaststroke from Felipe Da Silva.

Daynara De Paula nearly cracked the top 20 in the world rankings in the women’s 100-meter fly with a meet record 58.77 for the win. Daniele Paoli Jesus picked up second-place honors in 1:00.01, while Daiene Dias earned third overall in 1:01.22. Henrique De Souza Martins threw down a meet-record 53.06 in the men’s 100-meter fly, just half-a-second outside the world Top 20. Guilherme Rosolen snatched second in 53.72 with Arthur Mendes placing third in 53.79.

Larissa Oliveira picked up the women’s 200-meter free title in a meet-record 2:00.11. Jessica Cavalheiro touched second in 2:01.06 with Manuella Lyrio snaring third in 2:01.56. Giuliano Rocco followed with a touchout triumph ahead of Joao Amorim, 1:50.50 to 1:50.53, in the men’s 200-meter free. Miguel Valente placed a close third in 1:50.74.

Thalandra Cavalcanti cruised to victory in the women’s 200-meter back with a time of 2:19.29. Isabela Silva placed well behind with a second-place 2:23.29, while Natalia Mendes Diniz took third in 2:25.83. Leonardo De Deus shot down a meet record in the men’s 200-meter back with a 1:58.51. Fabio Santi touched well back with a 2:00.76 for second, while Fernando Dos Santos wound up third in 2:01.84.

Julia Gerotto won the women’s 400-meter IM with a 4:55.88 as just two other swimmers competed with her. Luciana Ribeiro (5:13.14) and Camila Cotta (5:40.71) also turned in swims in the event. Miguel Valente grabbed the men’s 400-meter IM title in 4:23.17, clipping Thiago Simon’s 4:23.27. Giuliano Rocco pocketed third in 4:27.85.

The foursome of Etiene Medeiros, Priscila De Souza, Daynara De Paula and Jessica Cavalheiro raced to a meet record in 3:44.83 to win the women’s 400-meter free relay. Meanwhile, Henrique Martins, Felipe De Souza Martins, Italo Duarte and Fernando Da Silva topped the men’s 400-meter free relay in 3:20.38.
