Niccolo Bonacchi Downs Italian Record in 50 Back on Final Night in Italy

RICCIONE, Italy, April 12. THE super fast Italian Spring Nationals ended on a high note with Niccolo Bonacchi claiming the mens’ 50-meter backstroke Italian record in Riccione.

Bonacchi broke the Italian record in the men’s 50-meter back with a 24.65. That performance eclipsed the 24.77 previously set by Mirco Di Tora in 2009, and pushed Bonacchi to third in the SwimVortex world rankings behind Camille Lacourt (24.37) and Ben Treffers (24.54).

Aurora Ponsele cruised to victory in the women’s 800-meter freestyle finale with an 8:27.65. That swim moved her to seventh in the world rankings. Martina Rita Caramignoli took second overall in 8:38.66 with Dilatta Carli finishing third in 8:40.15.

Luca Pizzini dominated the men’s 200-meter breaststroke finale with a 2:10.84. That effort jumped him to seventh in the world rankings. Flavio Pizzarri wound up second overall in 2:12.83, nearly two full seconds back of the winner. Edoardo Giorgetti finished third in 2:12.84.

Arianna Castiglioni posted a 1:08.13 to win the women’s 100-meter breaststroke to kick off the evening. Ilaria Scarcella also clocked a 1:08 with a 1:08.80 to take second tonight, while Giulia De Ascentis picked up third in 1:09.28.

In an exciting finish, Francesco Pavone clipped Matteo Pelizzari in the men’s 200-meter fly, 1:57.73 to 1:57.79. Michele Cosentino snared third overall in 1:58.49. Another close call came in the women’s 50-meter free with Erika Ferraioli edging out Silvia Di Pietro, 25.37 to 25.39. Giogia Biondani placed third in 25.56.

Stefanie Pirozzi checked in with a 2:13.68 to win the women’s 200-meter IM, while Luisa Trombetti took second in the event with a 2:15.35. Alice Nesti snared third in 2:17.37. Andrea Mitchell D’Arrigo raced his way to a 1:47.18 in the men’s 200-meter free, moving to 10th in the world in the process. Filippo Magnini claimed second in 1:47.58 with Maro Belotti earning third in 1:48.98.
