Chinese University Games: Zhang Fenglin, Gong Jie Pick Up Wins

TIANJIN, China, September 17. WITH Chinese superstar Sun Yang taking the day off after a 200, 400, 800 freestyle sweep, other swimmers had the chance to claim some of the spotlight at the Chinese University Games.

Zhang Fenglin, who clocked a swift time of 1:55.59 at the 2012 Olympics to rank fifth this year, cruised to victory in the men's 200 back in China with a 1:57.09. Huang Chaosheng touched second in 2:00.80, while Cheng Feiyi wound up third in 2:01.68.

Gong Jie, who ranks fourth in the world with a 2:05.38 from the Chinese Long Course Nationals in April, checked in with a 2:07.68 to win the women's 200 fly. Zhu Jiani placed second in 2:09.91, while Ha Sinan took third in 2:10.13. Liu Zige, the world-record holder in the event with a 2:01.81 from the techsuit era, finished a distant seventh in 2:14.58.

Zhao Jing topped the women's 200 backstroke event in 2:11.48, while Chen Jie took second in 2:12.24. Liao Yali earned third-place honors in 2:12.70. Shi Feng clipped Yang Zhixin, 1:58.16 to 1:58.69, to win the men's 200 fly. Zhong Guixu hit the wall in 1:59.13 to take third-place in the event.

Ma Xiang claimed the men's 50 breast title in 28.17, while Wang Shuai touched second in 28.23. Xue Jiajia wound up third in 28.75. Zhao Jin raced to victory in the women's 50 breast with a 31.91, while Zhang Ying finished second in 32.18. Wang Chang completed the top three in 32.93.
