Speedo Performance of the Week, Presented By Pace Club: Ryan Lochte’s 200 IM

PHOENIX, Arizona, July 15. WE are about three weeks away from the USA Swimming national championships, a meet that will select the athletes for the Pan Pacific championships and next year’s world championships. It’s a very important meet and one that needs to have everyone on their game in order to be on the national team through 2015.

Ryan Lochte’s ability to perform at his usual level at nationals was put into doubt last April when he withdrew from the 200 IM final at the Grand Prix in Mesa, then pulled out of the meet in Charlotte altogether when he aggravated his knee again. But last weekend at the Bulldog Grand Slam in Georgia, Lochte cast aside any doubts with a 1:58.65 in the 200 IM, his fastest time of the season. We’re going to show you the entire race, and let you marvel at Lochte’s opening speed, his 34-second breaststroke split and his easing off the gas in the final 15 meters to do what’s necessary to get to the wall first.

As you saw, there’s plenty more in the tank for Lochte, and he hadn’t started tapering yet. Lochte will be looking to defend his Pan Pac title in the 200 IM and make it two years in a row as the top 200 IMer in the world. Things are looking good so far, and that’s why we’re giving Ryan Lochte the Speedo Performance of the Week!
