Missouri Valley Masters Breaks World Record in 800 Free Relay

ROELAND PARK, Kansas, March 11. THE first Masters long course world record of 2013 goes to Missouri Valley Masters, as four swimmers stepped up on Saturday and smashed the world record in the 800 freestyle relay for the 120-159 age group at a special relay meet.

Joy Stover (37 years old), Christie Peterfish (27), Tony Stewart(40) and Tony Diers (33) swam an 8:41.82 to erase the world and national mark of 8:47.80 in the mixed-gender relay event swum by Novaquatics in August 2011. The swim was done at a special relays-only meet, in which teams were able to put up times in all three competitive courses (short course yards, short course meters, long course meters). Relay age groups in long course meters swims are determined by adding the ages of the four swimmers.

The 800 freestyle relay, as well as the 400 free relay and 400 medley relay, were first ratified as Masters world records by FINA in September 2009. In many cases the United States Masters Swimming national record in those three relays are faster than the world record, since USMS had been tabulating records in those events for many years.

But in the case of the 120-159 mixed 800 freestyle relay, Saturday's swim was the fastest swum anywhere in the world in history.
