High School State Swimming Championships: New York Boys

WEBSTER, New York, March 6. NEW York boys closed out their high school season competing at the Boys Public High School Championships and the New York State Federation Championships, March 1-2 in Webster.

Public School Championships
During the public school portion of the championships, Victor senior Jeffrey Williamson posted state records of 44.73 in the 100 free and 1:36.82 in the 200 free. The 200 time would be lowered further during the federation portion of the meet. The 100 free time erased Drake Beckstead's 2011 time of 44.95.

Gunther Cassell, a Huntington sophomore, set a state record of 56.24 in the 100 breast. Stanley Wong set the prior mark at 56.48 in 2011.

Shenendehowa junior Ryan Gordon claimed victory in both the 100 back (49.40) and the 200 IM (1:49.89). Three other juniors also earned individual titles: Bethlehem Central's Gunnar Zemerling (50 free, 21.10), Ithaca's Ryan Nicholson (100 fly, 48.30) and Pittsford's Patrick Ransford (500 free, 4:26.11).

Ransford anchored Pittsford's winning 200 medley relay with seniors Shea Ransford and Matthew Tanchick, plus junior Brett Eslinger (1:34.47). Junior William Dawson joined Tanchick and the Ransford brothers for a 3:10.42 in the 400 free relay.

Nick Rodriguez, a senior at Mexico High, put together 504.55 points for the diving title.

Nicholson led Ithaca's winning 200 free relay (1:25.93), followed by seniors Nathan Bach and Will Fisher, plus freshman Francis Schickel.

Pittsford claimed the team title with 213 points, followed by Shenendehowa (170), Ithaca (129), Fairport (124) and Sachem North (91).

Federation Championships
Member schools of the federation can include public and private/Catholic high schools, as well as magnet schools in New York City.

Jack Boyd, a junior at Canisius, bettered the federation mark in the 200 free with his 1:36.19. Thomas Luchsinger set the previous record of 1:37.12 in 2008. Boyd also captured the 500 free in 4:24.90, bettering Ransford's time in that event.

Fordham Prep's 400 free relay of juniors Patrick Conaton, Richard Mannix, Declan Kennon–with senior Joseph Eiden anchoring–set a federation and state record 3:05.61. Conaton and Eiden were joined by sophomore Michael Verini and Oliver Patrouch for a 1:25.47 win in the 200 free relay.

All other events were won by public school swimmers.

For the third consecutive season, Fordham Prep claimed the federation team title with 269 points. Pittsford followed in second (188), with Canisius third (155), Shenendehowa fourth (146) and Ithaca fifth (108).
